78% of towns are using products from organic farming in the menus of school meals, according to a survey conducted by the Federation of Mayors of towns (FMVM) and released September 2. Of these towns, 68% use less than 10% bio for these meals.
14% of these towns are using between 10% and 20% bio, and 8% over 20% bio at those meals served in schools. The bio is mostly used for vegetables, fruit and bread, but rarely for meat and starches.
On average 25 schools per city used 350,000 meals per year, or about 2,000 meals per day and per school. The average price of a meal was 6.50 euros, covers the purchase of food (32%), personnel costs (50%) and other costs (18%).
This survey was conducted in June and July in 87 towns of France, whose population is between 20,000 and 100,000.
It was performed including the full set up of the Grenelle Environment Forum, which provides that 20% of the food served in catering, including school canteens and catering operations, will be from agriculture organic in 2020.
